Introduction to The Recovery Centre Family Programme
Drug dependency, eating disorders and other compulsive/addictive behaviours are illnesses that affect the whole family. As the disease progresses the dependent person suffers personality and behavioural changes. The family is also affected as they struggle to cope with, battle against, deny or surrender to the dis-ease. In an effort to maintain some form of balance and relationship with the addict, families and others who may be involved tend to adjust their behaviours and may become affected emotionally, physically and spiritually.
The Recovery Centre family programme is carefully designed to help families and patients develop a new awareness of how the whole family has become involved in the disease and address any unhealthy or dysfunctional behaviour patterns. We will provide information through lectures, group discussion, talks and interactive workshops to enable family members to become aware of their own self-defeating behaviours and reactions which may bring pain and disillusionment.
Family members will be helped to explore their roles in relationship to the patient; you will be supported in identifying and dealing with difficult feelings and defences that may hinder recovery. Everyone will be given the opportunity to build on personal resources and characteristics which may have been dormant and can now be used to build a healthy family system. This will help patients, families and friends develop; honest, caring and improved relationships that promote healing, healthier interactions, individual expression and allow intimacy.
